![]() ![]() In the past, I’ve used the format as a vehicle to investigate generals that have seen very little spotlight within constructed formats. That means exposure to cards you’ve never seen before, both during deck construction and games. Decks rely on draft fodder and the kinds of rares that normally take up space in a trade binder. ![]() Dollar General is an interesting variant of Commander, because the decks often have the power level of a preconstructed deck with a personalized touch. With this year’s Commander product finally out, my thoughts turn to the kinds of decks that are going to create a fun experience for people who haven’t gotten into Commander. ![]() The additional layer being that every card comprising a 100-card deck must cost less than a US dollar. Like the DCI-sanctioned formats, most casual variants are Constructed, Limited, and Multiplayer formats.A variant of the Commander format, itself a casual multiplayer variant format for Magic: the Gathering with specific rules centered around a legendary creature called a General. While some casual formats are sanctioned for Magic Online, people have started playing these formats with real cards (e.g., Pauper). ![]() Others like Conspiracy Draft were conceived by Wizards to mix up the gaming experience. Some of them, like Commander, have been endorsed by Wizards of the Coast and received official rules and ban lists. They are sometimes labeled with a format name (usually whatever format happens to include all the cards in the deck) but nowhere close to the potency of competitive decks.Ĭasual formats or variants are mostly invented by players. These decks tend not to be " netdecks" (i.e., decks people copied from other people, usually on the internet) and are more influenced by what cards individually appealed to the deck builders. Casual Constructed Ĭasual Constructed is Magic play where the decks tend to be lower in power level, synergy, and polish. Kitchen table or “cards I own” is the most popular way to play the game. Casual games are often played with theme decks that possess a unifying idea, image, or motif, repeated or developed throughout. Casual players, making up a significant majority of the customer base for the game, are generally more concerned about having fun than winning. Casual players play playing Magic without an attempt to enter a DCI-sanctioned tournament. ![]()
